Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary

At a distance of 13 km from Dandeli Bus Stand, Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the River Kali at Dandeli in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. This is the second largest sanctuary in Karnataka and also one of the best places to visit in Dandeli. The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as a tiger reserve in the year 2007. The sanctuary is contiguous with the Mahaveer Sanctuary in Goa and Anshi National Park in Karnataka. Karnataka state government has officially notified the Dandeli Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant on 4th June 2015. Spread over an area of 866.41 sq. km, the sanctuary lies at an altitude ranging between 100 m to 970 m with highest point being Hegada Temba. The dense forests of the Sanctuary are crisscrossed by the meandering streams of River Kaneri and River Nagzari, tributaries of River Kali.

Syntheri Rock

At a distance of 31 km from Dandeli, Syntheri Rock is monolithic granite structure with a height of 300 feet, which is located in the dense forests of Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the top Dandeli tourist places to visit. Syntheri Rock is a huge, massive limestone rock formed due to volcanic eruptions some million years ago. It is named after an English lady called Ms. Cinthera who is believed to have discovered this place in 20th century. River Kaneri passes along the side of this rock. Owing to the flow of the river from the vicinity, erosion has resulted in the rocks getting hollowed. The corners of this rock cave are inhabited by numerous pigeons and honeybees. There is a 15-20 minute walk from the vehicle parking to the rock. A flight of 200 odd steps downwards lead you to the base. The steps are very steep and various types of rocks found in the forest are displayed along the steps.

Kavala Caves

At a distance of 24 km from Dandeli, 93 km from Sirsi, 120 km from Karwar and 139 km from Gokarna, Kavala caves are the natural caves located in the heart of Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary and is one of the popular points of interest in Dandeli. These caves are formed by volcanic activity ages back and are situated deep with-in the forest. It is believed that these caves have been in existence since the prehistoric times. Currently, the caves are inhabited by numerous snakes and bats. Also known as Limestone Caves or Sidda, these caves are very small in dimension and have a lot of stalagmite formations. At some places the opening gets smaller and visitors need to crawl through.

Sykes Point

At a distance of 6 km from Ambikanagar and 24 km from Dandeli Bus Stand, Sykes Point is the top viewpoint in Dandeli and also one of the famous places of sightseeing in Dandeli. It is a popular sightseeing attraction offering a beautiful view of deep valleys and thickly forested hills. Sykes Point is named after a British engineer who discovered it. From this viewpoint, one can get a good view of Nagzari River & River Kali confluence. The viewpoint also offers a beautiful view of the sunset. Bird watchers frequent the site to watch the giant hornbills at this place. The Nagzari Power House of the Kali Project is situated at the bottom of the hill. Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) operates this power station.

Supa Dam

At a distance of 1 km from Ganeshgudi Bus Stand and 23 km from Dandeli, Supa Dam, built across River Kali, is situated in Joida taluk of Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. This is one of the largest dams in the Karnataka and also one of the well-known Dandeli places to visit. This dam is built to manage the water of Kalinadi River to provide irrigation facility to the surrounding area. The construction of the dam started in 1974 and ended in 1987. The dam was built by Hindustan Steel Works Construction Limited (HSCL) and is now operated by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited. The power house was commissioned in 1985. The name of the dam is derived from Suparulu (God of forests).
